Ottawa panel approves nuisance rules with stiff penalties

City commissions outline daily offense penalties up to 500 dollars and 30 days in jail for nuisances plus a 1000 dollar maximum. cleanup costs may be added to property taxes. Junk vehicles defined as unregistered or inoperable and missing equipment. Commissioners support maximum penalties to curb the problem quickly.

Library seeks grants for Franklin move and literacy program

Ottawa Library Board discusses two grant options to fund moving to the Franklin building and a literacy program in cooperation with Ottawa schools. A 50-50 match is planned for the federal Library Services and Construction Act grant with about $60,000 in matching funds, plus a state literacy grant needing tutors and four computer work stations. The board also reallocates endowment funds into CDs and transfers from a mutual fund to a CD to secure better rates.

Ottawa Chamber announces leadership class and orientation

Tornado Kills At Least Four In Arab Alabama

A pre dawn tornado ripped across north Alabama killing at least four people in Arab and injuring more than 50. The dead include a young child. Residents reported lack of warning sirens before the 5 am strike while a Birmingham Weather Service warning followed a separate Huntsville office evacuation. Twenty six people were admitted to area hospitals with a range of injuries.

Garnett Officials Consider Bond Draft and Public Comment

Garnett commissioners discussed a draft bond resolution and information from the issuing company but made no decision. They met in executive session on land acquisition for electrical upgrades while continuing negotiations. A bloodmobile will visit Garnett February 28 from noon to 7 p.m. at First United Methodist Church basement with cholesterol testing for donors.

Senators pressed to keep Kansas Lottery amid repeal bill

A Senate panel heard testimony on a bill to make repealing the Kansas Lottery harder by removing a 2‑year positive action requirement. If lawmakers fail to act, the lottery would auto terminate, with 90 percent of proceeds funding economic development projects.
