New federal privacy law seals hospitals lips
The new federal health privacy rules, effective April 14, limit hospital disclosures without patient permission and may significantly curb information in patient directories. Hospitals will often withhold or delay details, affecting news crews, clergy, and daily patient visitation while allowing limited data only with consent or when clearly in the patient’s best interest.
