The west side chimney of Ottawa Cooperatives southern building was part of a boiler system for a flour mill. Former manager Adrian Derousseau said the tall chimney was cut down 20 to 25 years ago after the top weakened. The old mill, built in 1881 as Excelsior Mill, later known as HD Crane & Co. and Forest Park Milling, then Ross Milling, was taken over by Ottawa Coop in the 1950s after the Ross operation moved to Newton following the 1951 flood.
Ottawa University football teammates Jordan Reed and Sam Brazeal planned a quiet night of music and rap. Brazeal died and Reed faces six months feared in prison after a vehicle homicide plea. Reed, 21, Wichita, pleaded no contest to the charge in Franklin County District Court. Sentencing set for 11 a.m. April 26.
An amended complaint and plea deal between the Franklin County Attorney and Reed's attorney propose a one year sentence with six months suspended for involuntary manslaughter and failure to report an accident involving death. The agreement also calls for 12 months supervised probation after six months in jail, subject to Judge Witteman's approval.
