Ottawa Board Dodges Finance Suit Amid School Funding Clash

Ottawa boards declined to join the Schools for Fair Funding lawsuit, arguing the state finance formula unfairly distributes aid. Superintendent Jan Collins warned the coalition’s approach risks pitting districts against each other while lawmakers and Gov. Sebelius prepare to respond to Judge Bullock’s ruling. The district plans a public hearing to republish the 2004-2005 budget, adding state funds due to enrollment gains, with no tax increase, and budgets to grow about 100 thousand dollars. The board also approved church use of Ottawa Middle School facilities, amended teacher seminar rules for next year, and advanced a plan for a bond issue for new schools in the general elections.
