FDR Era CCC Camp Built Soil Conservation in Franklin County

The piece recalls a 1935 CCC camp five miles northwest of Ottawa on Alva J. Hoover land, housing World War I veterans who built ponds terraces windbreaks and waterways under Soil Conservation Service supervision. Camp life featured army discipline and good meals as it helped plant the county’s early soil conservation program, later expanding beyond Tally Creek and ending in 1941 as jobs returned.

Franklin County Conservation District Meets Thursday in Richmond

The Franklin County Conservation District holds its annual meeting Thursday at the Richmond Community Building. Lunch at 11 45 a.m. funded by local banks and the district. A business session includes reports and one supervisor election with Art Rockhold seeking reelection after 15 years. Awards go to two conservation farmers and limerick contest winners Kent Scholl Pat Printy and Ricky Williams. Delbert Anderson receives a posthumous award accepted by his brother Glen. Dinner features speaker Lowell Burchett on minimum tillage. Pomona High School Stage Band will perform. Public invited.
