Herald office notes two high school girls showing interest in a Herald. Tea event planned Monday afternoon at Rand. 6:8 pp. ms includes details of the tea at Ransom Memorial hospital and other local visits and notices.
Hospital notes list admissions including Mrs Clara Belle Owen of Williamsburg and Mrs Flora Williams at 526 Walnut. Births recorded for Theodore Norton in Toronto and George Scott at 1224 College, with infant weights noted. Several dismissals followed, including Joe Oakes and Mrs Femnes Sharp Jr with infant, and others at 1004 Walnut and 1498 S Main.
Mrs. Georgia Neese Clark Gray former treasurer of the United States identified Joe Herbert Hoskins as one of three men who helped rob her bank. Hoskins and two accomplices allegedly forced Gray to drive to the bank and hand over about 8000 dollars on January 2 in Richland Kansas. Andrew J Gray also identified Hoskins. Hoskins faces charges with Billy Gene Ross and Laurenee Youngdry.
A chaotic zoo market discussion in Ottawas covers red necked ostriches lions and bison with prices ranging from $50 to $1800 as buyers haggle. Separately, Memorial Auditorium hosts Thornton Wilder’s Our Town by First Baptist Family Forum class February 20 and 22 with a $1 adult and 50 cent student admission to fund a new church.
The death notice for Mrs. Mattie Nichols, 81, in Topeka outlines her birth in 1874 in Frank Tuscaloosa Alabama and survivors including children and grandchildren. Separate campus reports describe Alabama University facing integration protests with a Negro coed and legal actions over enrollment, amid federal court rulings and President Eisenhower addressing immigration law revisions.
President Eisenhower urged Congress to overhaul immigration laws to reduce inequities and ease admission for about 220,000 foreigners annually as permanent residents. He argued for a fairer system and easier paths to residency within the United States.
Mrs Hudson seeks a divorce after the Board of Trustees denied her admission citing conduct and marital history. The Alabama Legislature backed the trustees while Miss Lucy’s exclusion drew criticism. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People urged criminal action to stop her attendance, directing a telegram to Atty. Gen. Brownell who was out of the country. An uneasy calm followed.
President Eisenhower said the United States will give top priority to guided missiles and will not be complacent about its position versus the Soviet program. He noted the Soviet Union may lead in some areas but the U S also holds leads in others. Trevor Gardner returns from Miami to address reports he may quit as Air Force research chief over missile policy.
Oliver Edward Cruey age 20 and Marjorie Jean Crusy age 18 both of Independence Missouri obtained a marriage license. Kenneth E B Saffron age 18 and Sylvia Elaine Crane age 16 of Ottawa Missouri also secured a license.
In Garnett Kansas a special reports that Anderson County had no marriage licenses sold in January, the first January in county history with a total blank in the licenses. Probate Judge Deane Smith notes the record, while local commentary jokes about Leap Year effects and bachelor resistance.
Small town post offices in Anderson County are closing one by one. On January 31 Selma and Lane Elm offices shut down with mail redirected to rural routes from Kincaid and Blue Mound. Bush City will close next with mail via Garnett route 2. Harris will remain as the last small two post office in the county by March 1.
In Franklin County Kansas the Probate Court announces the estate of James C Firestone deceased. Clarence H Firestone was appointed and qualified as administrator on January 28 1956. Creditors and heirs must file their claims within nine months from the first publication or be barred. Ottawa Franklin County Kan this 8th day of January 105.
