Fred Williams of Hutchinson, president of the National Ayrshire Breeders Assn., was named a Kansas Dairy Leader. The Inter Breed Dairy Cattle Council presented the award during Farm and Home Week at Kansas State College, making him the fifth Kansan to receive the honor.
Mrs. Ruth Stewart wife of Dr Jay Stewart of West Palm Beach Fla died after illness. Funeral set for Feb 7. She is survived by her husband two sons Jay Jr and Dr James M Stewart three grandchildren and one sister Mrs Mary Greer. Dr Stewart is son of late Charles C Stewart and his wife Mrs Howard R Long and Mrs Ray Q Brewster are her sisters.
Funeral services for Mrs W A Swift who died Feb 2 were held at Lamb Funeral Home. Rev Charles P Knight officiated with pallbearers H A Wharton R M Clogston C M Sheldon Carl D Cavett W W Broyhill R L Peters Co M Ott and Tom F Porter. Mrs Roger Fredrikson sang with Mrs J R Henning at the piano. Kensington club and First National Bank staff attended. Burial was in Highland cemetery.

Secretary of defense Charles E. Wilson said the nation is spending about as much as possible on defense without harming the economy. He cited 38 billion dollars for defense through fiscal 1958 as the cap, warning against exceeding it while noting the current strength could sustain a small war or an atomic conflict in its early stages. Wilson spoke in Miami to the Committee of 100 during a vacation. Also noted is a May 15, 1956 plane crash in Orleans Ontario that killed fifteen, including eleven nuns.
In St Louis police report Gerald Ellis 16 and Wylie Clement 17 listened to a tape from Jerrold Pearson 15 showing gunplay after school with guns from Pearson’s home. Jerrold collapsed outside and died from a chest wound. investigators say a pistol hammer slipped during the incident, ruled accidental.
ST. LOUIS farmers and officials at the 11th annual National Association of Soil Conservation Districts meeting say only soil conservation keeps drought from returning Dust Bowl days. They warn the job isn’t done as soil loss remains high. An Ada Oklahoma farmer says the soil is still washing away twice as fast as it can be anchored. A Dalhart Texas farmer and Bernard Becker of Beaver City Nebraska note ongoing drought impacts including farm sales by 27 former GIs in Becker’s county.
Loveland Colorado residents flood the post office with Valentines to be mailed with the Loveland post mark and a special cachet. The seal features a heart shaped birthday cake and a Cupid bow rhyme noting the 10th anniversary of the Valentine remailing service.
Former President Harry S. Truman sustained a six stitch cut to the back of his head after slipping on ice at his Independence residence yesterday. No other injuries were reported and he is resting under medical observation.
Washington reports quote two business spokesmen naming inflation as the key problem for the nation. NAM warns of price doubling by 1975 if inflation continues, while AFL-CIO leader George Meany notes high but faltering growth, with Meany citing plant expansion and consumer demand as concerns.
General Nathan F. Twining will speak at dedication ceremonies for Smoky Hill Air Force Base on March 16. The base will be renamed in honor of the late Col. David Schilling, a Leavenworth native killed in an August auto accident in England.

Topeka reports three Senate bills expanding damage suit rules in auto crash cases. One removes the $25,000 wrongful death cap, another allows suits in the plaintiff’s county, and a third lets juries decide comparative negligence. A separate bill by Sen. Fayette Rowe would limit state hospital costs to spouses and parents of minor children, capping payments at $12 weekly. The measure urges investment in U.S. Savings Bonds.
