Blue Valley rolled past Ottawa High 60-25 in the East Kansas League behind a 49 percent shooting pace and a 22-4 fourth quarter run. Maggie LaValley led with 23 points while Dawn Murray added seven for Ottawa. Ottawa remains 0-5 in league play, 3-8 overall, and meets Garnett in the Louisburg invitational next. Junior varsity also went to Blue Valley 47-24.

Todd Steward and Carol Davis of Waverly also earned Area Players of the Week with 23 and 21 points in wins over Williamsburg and Marais des Cygnes Valley, and 18 and 25 points in two decisive wins to reach 11 3.

Abortion Allegations Hit Wichita State Basketball Scandal
Kansas City Times reports a Wichita State coed says coaches arranged and paid for her abortion after a star player fathered her child. The abortion occurred January 18, 1980 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita with hospital documents noting the attending doctor and a private room charge of 12.50 dollars. The player denies coaches knew of the pregnancy. the coachs deny payment for the abortion, while the woman says hush money and employment were promised.

Waverly Captures Both Junior High Titles in Big 7
Waverly swept the Big 7 junior high tournament securing girls and boys titles. The girls defeated Lebo behind a balanced attack led by Judy Szollosi with 10 points and Hammon of Lebo earned top honors with 11. The Waverly girls finished the season unbeaten at 10-0. The boys won 25-24 over Pomona in a tight final as Joe Redding scored 8 and Tim Peavler and Troy Olney 6 each. Pomona led most of the game but missed a late shot with 10 seconds left.
