Workers melted ice blocking the essential service water pump at Wolf Creek nuclear plant and restarted the pump early this morning. The plant remains shut down with a notification of unusual event in effect as crews ensure the icing will not recur and determine when operations can resume.
In Topeka supporters claim English as the state’s official language is good public policy. Opponents call the bill divisive and racist. David Schlosser of U S English asserts arguments for English, while Arthur Solis of Olathe calls the measure discriminatory. The Kansas Farm Bureau and American Legion back the bill.
The Kansas Senate tentatively approved a measure to designate the square dance as the official state folk dance. Sponsor Sen. Mike Harris notes 150 square dance clubs in the state and quips about Kansans being square.
Kansas Treasurer Sally Thompson criticized a Tuesday air senate bill to combine the municipal investment pool with the idle funds pool and create a new agency to manage both pools. Chesbro says applications will be accepted until the meeting and the only requirement is eligibility for the post.
Rep Ralph Tanner defends a bill to set statewide admissions standards for Kansas public universities. Critics question impacts on access and education quality. Tanner argues standards will boost K12 prep, reduce freshman dropout rates, and save remedial costs, while opponents urge preserving current reputations. In OPERA Kansas Senate Democrats charge Republicans blocked real property tax relief this session. They cite the Education Committee vote to extend the 35 mill statewide levy for one year, a move Democrats say prevents meaningful reform. Sen. Gov. Bill Graves office announced the appointment of 48 year old Burlington resident Fromme as a judge of the Fourth Judicial District.
