Kansans may vote April on instant bingo amendment

Kansas voters could decide in the April 4 city elections whether to legalize instant or pull tab bingo. If approved by February 28, the measure would be the fourth constitutional gambling expansion in Kansas, with hearings held by the joint House and Senate committees and no action taken yet.

Bill on truancy puts teeth in attendance law

A Kansas House Education Committee hearing explored a bill granting police power to pick up students under 16 during school hours for truancy. Officers could take youths to school or a district truancy center. expelled or suspended students would be returned home. Also reported, Wyandotte County Judge R David Lamar collapsed while jogging and died at 58 near the courthouse.

Simpson book rockets to top best-seller lists

O J Simpson's I Want to Tell You rushes to number one on The Wall Street Journal non fiction and general interest lists and tops USA Today's hardcover chart. The New York Times says it will lead their non fiction list for Feb. 12. Publisher Lite Brown & Co says first printing was 500,000 with 100,000 more in second print run, list price 17.50.

Hospital trustees approve rate hike at RMH

Ransom Memorial Hospital trustees met in special session and approved a 15 percent rate hike on 251 of its 2,250 service codes. The increase, effective today, covers selected surgical charges outpatient clinic services cardiopulmonary treatment imaging and some lab work, while seven items drop about 20 percent. net revenue rise estimated at about 119000 after Medicare and Medicaid payments.

Power plant worker files state complaint

Arry Fisher of the Ottawa power plant filed a Kansas Human Rights Commission discrimination complaint alleging disability based accommodation failures and retaliation for a 1983 lawsuit. He says a daytime shift was given to someone with less experience in October 1994. KHRC filing date was November 12, 1994. Fisher declined comment and directed inquiries to lawyer L J Leatherman, who was unavailable. City manager Scott Lambers declined to comment.

Ottawa officials tackle gangs and youth crime at special meeting

FBI and local law enforcement briefed about gang activity and youth crime at a Tuesday session led by Ottawa Police Chief Jeff Herrman at Ottawa University. Allan King noted strong community turnout and urged inter agency cooperation while highlighting federal focus via Safe Streets Task Forces in Kansas.

Planners Plan Public Session in Franklin County

The Franklin County Planning Commission sets a 7 p.m. public meeting at the County Annex Building to gather comment on the new comprehensive plan.
