John Mark Lambertson outlines Isaac Smith Kalloch birth 1832 to Boston pastor, abolitionist and Kansas leader who founded Ottawa College and the town’s first newspaper. He forged rail and bridges, later titled mayor of San Francisco, died 1890. Ottawa still bears his elusive stamp.
The Ottawa Public Library pressed on with business as usual as remodeling began on the main floor. Rule and Shrum Construction tore out the ceiling while library staff kept the main desk open. Harlow Walker cut a ceiling opening as Barbara Dew supervised. An unidentified woman crawled under plastic coverings to reach IRS forms as visitors waited to check out materials.
Franklin County faced a major winter storm with up to eight more inches possible, drifting snow and near-blizzard winds. Snow totals reached four inches by 7 am, causing slowed traffic, early closures, and shifted shifts at local stores and plants. Local officials urged not to dump snow into streets, with police ticketing littering.
Washington AP report describes Democrats attacking the 848.5 billion budget sent to Capitol Hill. Speaker ONeill and Sen. Chiles say passage in the House and Senate faces tough odds as Republicans and Democrats clash over deficit reduction. James Jones notes expected changes to the budget plan.
A nationwide independent trucker strike turned deadly with one driver killed in North Carolina and at least nine injured by gunfire or rocks. Since Monday dawn, trucks were fired on or sabotaged in 17 states, while traffic largely remained normal elsewhere. George Capps, 33, of Clayton NC, was shot on U S 701 near Newton Grove NC, with six other trucks hit by gunfire and two drivers injured in the state. A Pennsylvania teen suffered a fractured skull when a brick struck a car. a NY cattle auction near Buffalo was canceled for lack of trucks.
The independent truckers strike has had little impact in Kansas as bad weather kept more trucks off the roads. Highway Patrol Capt. Calvin Johnson noted many independents remain inactive while a Teamsters official said few operate in Kansas. Bud Moore of Local Union 696 echoed that the strike would have little effect in the state.
