Markets end 2009 with little change as PMIs lift spirits
New York stocks finish the penultimate trading day of 2009 with modest gains despite slipping commodity prices. The Chicago PMI rose to 60.0 in December signaling ongoing Midwest manufacturing expansion for a third straight month, while a stronger dollar restrained gains and highlighted year end caution. Investors await rate moves as 2009 closes with the S&P 500 up about 25 percent. Grain and farm quotes from Ottawa and Franklin County provide late trade details.
