Kansas Highway Program Is Big

TOPEKA The State Highway Commission ends a record year for contract awards and plans a bold 1958 program. New construction contracts of 8.735 million boosted 1957 total to 66.188 million, with about 80 million in improvements expected in 1958 if funds permit. Right of way spending reached 6.154 million through November 1957.

Funeral services for G G Newt Newton who died December 26 were held December 30 at McVey-Dengel Mortuary with Rev. Roger Fredrikson and Rev. Benjamin Moor officiating. Pallbearers included L D Hollingsworth Ralph Studebaker Clyde Hopkins Archie Wheeler Lowell and Lyle Fouts. Mrs R L Stevens played organ selections. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Funeral services for Charles A Keeler who died December 24 were held December 27 at the Ottawa Free Methodist Church. Rev. C. E. Howell officiated. Burial was in Worden Cemetery.

Two Killed In Eastern Kansas Crashes

Two persons died in Eastern Kansas accidents last night. James Carter, 25, Oklahoma City, died in a three car crash south of Hillsdale during a snowstorm. Lloyd N. Mosbarger of Wichita died near Lebo in a collision between his car and a truck on a railroad overpass. Mrs. Mosbarger had minor injuries. truck driver William Helms of Valley Station Kentucky was unhurt.

Local Markets Wheat and Corn Prices Amid Mixed Notes

Market brief lists grains and commodities with scattered prices. Wheat and barley show unclear values, soybeans at 1.99, white corn 1.05, yellow corn 1.05, shelled corn 1.10, oats around 0.34, Milo per hundred pounds not clearly given, butterfat 0.35 and eggs priced in the 28 to 32 range with hens and cocks noted in minor detail.

Prone Building Here Completed at Park and Main

Southwestern Bell completed a new dial telephone building at Park and Main three months ahead of schedule. The 115 by 75 foot structure is part of a 1.4 million dollar program to bring dial service and direct distance dialing to Ottawa by early fall. Finishing touches are underway and installation of the complex electronic switching equipment is scheduled for February.

Western Electric Crew to Install Upgraded Lines

Western Electric crews will begin installing the new system at once. The project will take several months to complete, officials said. Repairs include rebuilding telephone lines, installing new equipment, and eliminating four party service as progress continues.
