Generics Boom Across U S Grocery Shelves Says USDA Report
Generics spread to about 11 000 stores operated by 125 grocers with up to 150 items per line. They cost about one third less than national brands, with savings driven by plain packaging and minimal advertising. Some items appeal as ingredients where appearance matters less, while others may fall short. The USDA noted generics account for 5 to 15 percent of sales and may rise to one of four dollars spent on bare-bones items by year end.
