Hijack forces French review and Algerian link shock
Paris reports four hijackers from the Armed Islamic Group shot dead after storming an Air France jet at Marseille. They failed to turn the plane into a flying bomb but disrupted transportation links between Algeria and France, impacting oil industry support. Four priests were killed in Tizi Ouzou nearby with no claimed responsibility.

Texas becomes second most populous state surpassing New York
The Census Bureau reports Texas reached about 18.4 million residents as of July 1, 1994, up 356 thousand in the year ending that date, overtaking New York at roughly 18.2 million.
