Kansans Back Johnson While GOP Keeps Control in 1964
In 1964 Kansas voters backed President Johnson while Republicans held solid state control. Governor Avery won reelection after leaving Congress, and John Anderson left office with plans for the next move. Democratic gains included five legislature seats and a stronger influence on close issues like reapportionment and taxes. The Goldwater faction united to block Anderson at the national convention, while Johnson support remained solid among Democrats.
