Prison gifts from inmates aid kids in need
In Ellsworth Kansas inmates at the Ellsworth Correctional Facility will rebuild about 275 bicycles by Christmas Eve for donation to service groups aiding families unable to buy bikes. Since 1999 over 600 bikes have been given new life. At Somers Connecticut Osborn Correctional Institution inmates sew rag dolls from fabric scraps for charitable use by private industry, hotels, and hospitals.

Fire destroys home on Locust Street in Ottawa
A fire at 931 South Locust Street began around 4:50 a.m. damaging the residence. Fire chief Jeff Carner cited a likely cause from a disconnected wood stove flue pipe. Five Williams family members slept inside but all escaped safely. Damages were described as substantial. Karen Williams plans a donation account at Peoples Bank for contributions.
