Five sites named for national monument protection
Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt urged President Clinton to designate Pompeys Pillar in Montana and four other areas as national monuments. The list includes Upper Missouri River Breaks in Montana, Carrizo Plain in California, Virgin Islands Coral Reef near St John, and Buck Island Reef expansion. Monuments would add protections against mining, drilling and vehicle use.
