As Ottawa braces for holiday, Ottawa Junior High custodian Charles Heck and others finish tasks before vacation. Downtown the business district buzzes with shoppers filling Main Street and parking stalls scarce as families and children buy last minute gifts.
Four Wells ville youths escaped serious injury Friday night after a one car crash on Main Street near Pendleton intersection. A 1970 Dodge Challenger driven by Craig W. Hughes left 93 feet of skid marks before striking a bridge abutment. Passengers included Steve L. Michaels Tammy Stockstill and James Stonequist all treated and released. Stockstill admitted for observation then discharged. No seat belts were worn and the car overturned, with hospital visits by Camron-Towner Ambulance Service.
Paris dispatch says North Vietnamese delegation denied reports that Defense Minister Vo Nguyen Giap was killed in Haiphong. Officials asserted the claim was a Western psychological war ploy, noting no corroborating evidence and no knowledge from U.S. authorities. Giap, a key leader in Indochina wars, has repeatedly been rumored dead despite ongoing public statements.
A severe quake and fire struck Managua Nicaragua early today, destroying large portions of the city center. Reports from amateur radio operators say about 75 percent of Managua is ruined or heavily damaged, with thousands wandering in shock and many injured or dead. An American was killed. water and electricity are out, the presidential palace damaged, and hospitals leveled. U.S. embassy staff casualties were acknowledged while relief planes from Panama Canal Zone bases were prepared.
On Friday, Reginald Hurd of USC 288 faced a sit-in threat from sixth graders demanding bus transport to deliver a Christmas tree and food to a Princeton family. He met the demands, and the students delivered the tree, now donated to a needy home, echoing a TV Christmas tale.

AUBURN Calif AP 37 year old Navy Cmdr Gordon Ross Nakagawa, captured after his A6A fighter bomber was shot down over Haiphong, faces Christmas in a POW camp in North Vietnam. His mother recalls Santa visiting Tule Lake in 1942, while family and friends endure news of his captivity and hope for his safe return. Nakagawa, a Berkeley graduate and former ROTC student, has three children and remains proud of his Navy career amid war fears.
Former president Harry S. Truman, 88, slipped into critical condition on Saturday during a 2½ week hospitalization. Doctors cited increased lung congestion, complications with blood pressure, and reduced responsiveness as the situation strained his lungs heart and kidneys.
