Millions hold bonds with EE and HH types. EE bonds mature nine to eleven years with tax deferral until cashing. HH bonds pay semiannual interest and are taxed upon receipt. Old E bonds from 1941–1952 will mature 40 years after issue with no further extensions, offering options to cash and tax or reinvest into HH bonds.

NEW YORK AP Blue Cross and Blue Shield says a program urging second opinions before elective surgery has increased both operations and hospital costs. In a survey of 1500 patients, 70 percent followed the first surgeon’s recommendation. 30 percent pursued additional procedures before surgery. The findings prompt re evaluation of second opinion programs while officials note the program pays $50 for a second medical opinion.
