Franco skips funeral as illness suspends Spain leader
Generalissimo Francisco Franco, 81, is down with a mild flu and will miss Premier Luis Carrero Blanco’s funeral, despite Nixon sending Vice President Ford and Portugal’s Premier Caetano to represent their leaders. Authorities fear a crackdown on opposition after the assassination, with arrests expected but not yet reported. A Basque separatist ETA claim circulates amid police probes and a tunnel-bomb setup near the church.
