Former NY mayor Lindsay dead at 79
John V. Lindsay, a liberal Republican turned Democrat who led New York City through 1960s unrest, died at 79 in Hilton Head South Carolina from pneumonia and Parkinson's disease. He moved to a retirement community last year. Lindsay's tenure featured activism and urban reform amid transit strikes and rising welfare rolls, followed by party changes and a post mayoral career in law and media. He is survived by his wife Mary and four children.
