Unwed Couples Grow as Americans Delayed Marriages

The Census Bureau reports about 2.22 million unmarried couples living together, a first-time rise above 2 million. Growth surged between 1985 and 1986 after a pause, driven by Baby Boom offspring delaying marriage, higher education and careers, and social acceptance. Cohabitation trends reflect women increasingly in the labor force, with educated partners common and some viewing cohabitation as a step before marriage. A separate Numbers News note also signals a rebound in traditional married-couple families among those delaying marriage.
