William Danson, 29, was found guilty by a Jackson County jury of nine counts including second degree murder of Elena Dawson's unborn child after he struck his pregnant daughter with a croquet mallet and kneeled her, while also abusing his other children.
The U S Supreme Court stayed the execution of Joseph Roger O Dell III who faced the electric chair in Virginia for the 1985 rape sodomy and strangling of Helen Schartner. Italy and Pope John Paul II publicly pressed for clemency. DNA tests are cited by supporters.

A 29 year old Wichita man was arrested on second degree murder and aggravated assault charges in the death of Sandra Mason 35 a mother of four. Police said the man who visited Mason home uninvited rammed his truck into her twice as she left the property and fled. Mason's husband attempted to intervene by puncturing the truck's back tires with a knife and the suspect was arrested after two flat tires stopped the vehicle a few blocks away.
A four-alarm blaze on Southwest Boulevard heavily damaged or destroyed five establishments including Guadalajara Restaurant. Damage exceeds $400,000 as firefighters fought the cold in subzero wind chills. Investigators probe the cause with no injuries reported among firefighters or nearby residents.
