Program blends life of disabled and elderly in nursing homes

Demeris Tosi Smith oversees 41 Texas nursing homes and leads rehabilitation programs inside facilities for developmentally disabled, blind, alcoholic, and mentally ill residents. She aims to prove elders and disabled or troubled youth can coexist, with in-service staff training and specialized units for the blind and geriatrics. Physicians, families, and state agencies collaborate to improve care in aging geriatric homes. The effort includes an aging patient reality emphasis and a move to expand an audio visual training department within the system.
