Ottawa figure elected governor of district in new state reserve group
At a Wichita meeting of the Kansas Peace Officers Association Ottawa resident Wendell Lewis was elected District 1 governor for the forthcoming state reserve association. The group plans statewide training at an accredited college with eight districts and a firearms committee. District 1 includes Franklin County and counties such as Atchison Brown Doniphan Douglas Jackson Jefferson Johnson Leavenworth Lyon Marshall Miami Nemaha Osage Pottawatomie Riley Wabaunsee Wynadotte.

Charles Greeley Abbot, longtime Smithsonian scientist and solar energy advocate, died at 101. A noted astronomer and secretary of the Smithsonian from 1928 to 1944, he authored 12 books and 175 papers. His work included solar cookers, solar collectors, and theories linking solar cycles to weather forecasting. He traveled on expeditions worldwide and lived in Hyattsville, Maryland in later years.
