Two Story Outhouse Draws Belle Plaine Tourists
Belle Plaine celebrates its unique two story outhouse, a historic landmark that helped place the Hooper Bowler Hillstrom House on the National Register. Built in 1871 by Sanford Hooper and later owned by the Bowlers and Hillstroms, the structure showcases a rare double‑level design with separate upstairs and downstairs seating and a complex internal chute. The attraction spurred federal and state funding to preserve the house, now a museum with period furnishings reflecting each family’s era.
