Markets slip as investors weigh recession to recovery path

New York stocks recorded small moves in midday trading as traders debated when the recession would ease and corporate profits improve. The Dow fell 3.31 to 9,763.14, the S and P 500 dipped to 1,118.15, while the Nasdaq rose 0.61 to 1,947.12. Investors eyed mixed factory output and a flat CPI, hoping for a recovery into 2002 amid ongoing economic weakness.

Bessie Pearce obituary for Ottawa area resident dies at 95

Bessie M. Pearce, 95, of Ottawa, died December 13, 2001 at Village Manor Nursing Home. Funeral service Saturday at Dengel & Son Mortuary. She was born March 27, 1906 in Rantoul and married LeRoy Pearce in 1923. She survived by four daughters, 16 grandchildren, 45 great grand children and 40 great great grandchildren. Burial at Stanton Cemetery. Memorials to Bessie M. Pearce Memorial Fund.

Inmate’s mother smuggles Bible with marijuana

An inmate at Muscogee County Jail arranged through his girlfriend for his mother to pick up a large print Bible containing marijuana. Powell wrote to his girlfriend asking for cannabis. the mother paid 80 dollars to obtain the Bible after marijuana was placed in its binding. Michael Teasley pleaded guilty to aiding cross guards with drugs, receiving probation and a fine. The girlfriend and mother were not charged.

Farm bill prospects dim as Senate stalls debate
