Convicted killer Joseph C. Shaw, who faced a 5 am Friday electric chair death, won a federal appeals court stay. Fourth Circuit Judge J Dickson Phillips granted the delay in Durham after arguments over whether Shaw will have effective legal representation. Shaw admitted killing Carlotta Hartness and Tommy Taylor in October 1977. Supreme Court declined to hear the case earlier.
