One-Horse Mine Keeps Plugging Along

Ligonier Pennsylvania based miner Ted Spewock, 56, runs a one man coal operation shielded by a private property sign and fears federal safety inspectors may close the mine under the Coal Mine and Safety Act. He relies on Smokey the pony to haul three loads daily and has operated alone since 1970 after layoffs. He laments the law and hopes to support his family despite low output and rising costs.

Last block of KC Strip eyed for $30 million hotel

Kansas City officials plan to tear down the last surviving block of the 12th Street strip to make way for a $30 million hotel as part of downtown redevelopment. Bar and theater owners oppose the move arguing the strip keeps downtown alive while police crack down on street activity and visitors from out of town seek a quick visit rather than a convention city. Local bartenders say visitors come for a night out but rarely cause lasting harm.
