Michigan student helps discover new six million digit prime
Michael Shafer, a Michigan State University graduate student, aided by 211,000 computers worldwide, discovered a 6,320,430 digit Mersenne prime on his off the shelf PC as part of the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search project. The prime is 2 to the 20 996 011th power minus 1, verified by peers. Shafer notes the achievement is more about method than the number itself.

Prehistoric humans linked to early climate change study
Antarctic ice core analysis shows carbon dioxide began rising about 8,000 years ago as humans cleared land and raised livestock, with methane increases starting 3,000 years later. Bill Ruddiman, emeritus professor at the University of Virginia, says these shifts altered 400,000 years of atmospheric history and preceded the industrial era.
