Christmas Cards From Fad To Tradition In History

American Heritage outlines the evolution of Christmas cards from early New Year blue glass phials in ancient Egypt to 15th century woodcuts in England and the 1843 card by John Horsley and Sir Henry Cole. Louis PriAng, an immigrant lithographer in Roxbury, popularized cards in America, inspiring Victorian designs and a father of the American Christmas card. Religious scenes such as Madonna and Child and Adoration of the Magi by Durer, plus winter imagery, remain common. Judy McClure notes Christmas in Brazil feels summery with temperatures around 103, challenging traditional winter associations.
