Unemployment Rate Falls as South Bend Rebuilds After Studebaker
One year after Studebaker halted car production in South Bend 6822 workers were laid off. The city faced 9.1 percent unemployment before federal help and a local recovery plan spurred new firms, training programs, and 1200 rehires at the former plant. By November unemployment dipped to 5.9 percent as the economy diversified and more firms moved in.
