Liberal Officer Ousted From El Salvador Junta
In San Salvador a liberal colonel was removed from El Salvador's junta after he accused the militant right wing of infiltrating the armed forces. The purge comes as a U.S. commission probes possible military involvement in the murder of four American women. The junta's remaining members face pressure as civilian leaders threaten to resign. The killings, tied to tensions over civil war, occurred near the San Salvador airport last week and intensified U.S. aid cuts. Sisters Ita Ford Maura Clarke Dorothy Kazel and Jean Donovan are named among the victims.

Yao Wenyuan, a Gang of Four member and literary critic, admitted aiding factional fighting and libelous actions during the Cultural Revolution trial in Peking. He affirmed the libel charges but sought to absolve himself with clever arguments as other defendants face possible death sentences. Foreign reporters barred. Chinese TV broadcast portions showed a disheveled stance.

Property taxes remained the main local government revenue source, accounting for 78 percent of locally collected taxes in 1979, down from 83 percent in 1974 and 86 percent in 1969. Total local property tax receipts rose from 32.5 to 63 billion dollars, while state property tax collections stayed around 2 percent of their totals. Gross assessed property value reached about 1.7 trillion dollars in 1979, up 11.8 percent from 1978.
