The 2 week old recipient survived initial support and showed signs of blood flow, breathing, and urine output, but died hours later. The operation followed extensive animal transplant work and used cold storage, heart massage, and ventilation support as surgeons sought to revive the damaged heart. The death underscores the risks of the pioneering procedure amid an early series of attempts.
