Satellite Discoverer XVIII Launch Signals Space Spy Tests
A Discoverer XVIII satellite with secret sky spy gear launched from Vandenberg into polar orbit on the 19th anniversary of Pearl Harbor. A 300-pound capsule containing human tissue and bone marrow, algae, blood cells, spores, gamma globulin, and film will be ejected over the Arctic and may be intercepted by Air Force planes near Hawaii. The mission carries long range cameras and infrared sensors for the Midas and Samos series, using a hot Rod engine with 160000 pounds thrust to lift a 2100-pound satellite.
