Olmecs may have invented writing in the Americas
Researchers excavating near La Venta on the Mexican Gulf coast report 2600 year old carvings and a cylinder printing stone with symbols closely resembling later Mayan glyphs. The find suggests Olmecs initiated writing later adopted by Mayas, dating to about 650 B.C. and predating previous earliest examples.
