Puzzle Pieces Don’t Fit Together
National Transportation Safety Board investigators gathered nearly all information after a three day Lawrence hearing but still cannot determine why an Amtrak train sped into a seven degree curve at 78 miles an hour last Oct. 2 derailed near the Lawrence depot. Two killed, 20 seriously hurt, 49 released. The 18 car train suffered $4.5 million in damages with only the last car staying on the tracks.

Washington panel recommends taxing half of Social Security benefits for the elderly, cutting payroll deductions, financing Medicare from general revenues, and reshaping the benefit formula to aid low and high earners. It backs more frequent cost-of-living increases, earnings sharing for women, and possibly raising the retirement age after 2000.
