College admissions rise as high school graduations fall
A study by five educational groups shows colleges boosted recruiting from the 1979 to 1999 period to offset shrinking high school graduates. Despite a drop of over 250,000 graduates, college enrollment shares climbed, with black and Hispanic graduates increasing college attendance and overall immediate college enrollment rising from about 50 to 60 percent.

Founder of Educational Testing Service dies at 97
Henry Chauncey, founder of the Educational Testing Service which administers the SAT, died at his Shelburne home at age 97. A Harvard former assistant dean, Chauncey started ETS in 1947 and led it until 1970, helping standardized tests become a key factor in college admissions. He also served as a director of the College Board.
