Legislature Honors King Birthday In 1985 Session
In Topeka the 1985 Kansas Legislature will observe Martin Luther King Day as a holiday during its 90 day spring session on Monday January 21. The Legislative Coordinating Council approved the move despite reservations about holidaying births of Washington or Lincoln. The council also tentatively approved letting leaders elect staff to begin Dec 15, potentially duplicating some positions. A Kansas Supreme Court ruling on rules review prompted postponement of further action on executive rules until January. The Joint Committee on Administrative Rules recommends changes with a deadline and possible legislative amendments or funding withdrawals if unmet. The ultimate control lies with appropriations, said Sen. Merrill Werts.
