Teddy Roosevelt and the teddy bear origin tale
In 1902 President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shoot a wounded bear during a Mississippi hunt, sparking a cartoon and inspiring a New York shopkeeper’s wife to craft stuffed bears called Teddy’s Bears with the president’s permission. The craze boosted Ideal Toy Co and spread teddy bears into plates pins and scarves. Roosevelt later used the bear as a campaign symbol.
