Frankincense And Myrrh Industry In Decline Since Ancient Peak
Former bustling industry for frankincense and myrrh has waned from ancient gold‑like value to a small market. Frankincense, or alibanum, is a yellowish resin from trees. myrrh, a bitter amber resin, comes from a cedar‑like tree. Once central to perfume, medicine, and rituals, profits and demand faded as other scents rose in use. Explorations by Egyptians dated from 3000 B.C. to 1493 B.C. and isolation of sources on Socotra island show current trees smaller with sparse blooms.

Failing Resin Trade Linked to Ancient Frankincense
The article notes a broken chain from Cyrene becoming a Greek trading hub to frankincense overharvest causing near extinction. It cites Comiphora abyssinica as a likely source for myrrh with other guesses including geraniums, and states Somalia remains a key supply through European middlemen for perfume and church incense.
