Windbreaks Bring Value Across Kansas Farms
On a Wabaunsee County farm east of Alta Vista the Steere family shows windbreaks planted in 1957 as a 4H project. The trees, 50 Austrian pines and 50 redcedars, now stand 15 to 25 feet tall and protect cattle from cold winds. The annual state tree program plans to ship about 1.5 million trees next spring to counties for conservation plantings. Prices vary by species and order size, with new barefoot black locusts and returning Ponderosa pines added to the supply.

Range-Fed vs Feedlot Beef Costs Revealed by USDA Study
USDA economists compare six feedlot use variations to show that grazing alone often yields higher cost per pound than early confinement finishing. Delayed finishing on grain lowers costs and raises per-pound value, but range feeding lowers total beef output and can reduce grading.
