States seek federal help to upgrade 5200 miles to interstate standards
Eight states Georgia Kansas Louisiana Missouri Nebraska New Mexico Oklahoma and Texas plan to ask Congress for priority funding for 3200 miles of primary routes and up to 12000 miles overall to align with interstate standards. A DOT official estimates 21.8 billion dollars to upgrade 12000 miles. The group aims to raise the federal share from 70 to 30 to 90 to 10 while stressing connectors to the interstate system rather than new interchanges.
