Kansas, fresh from Maui, barely defeated 22 point underdog San Diego 79 72. Roy Williams labeled the effort garbage while noting the team arrived from Hawaii 45 hours earlier and faces Cincinnati in Chicago. Paul Pierce led Kansas with 18 points as San Diego’s Sean Flannery poured in 20.

He earned 40,000 while Fred Couples won 280,000 and secured a second straight Skins title, with Tom Watson taking 220,000 and John Daly failing to win. Overnight TV ratings reached 8.2 for round one, a 74 percent rise from 1995.
