Farmers and environmentalists unite against hog farms in Kansas
In southwest Kansas, Lyndell Herron and other family farmers join with environmental groups to form Stewards of the Land. They oppose large corporate hog operations over odor, waste, and water concerns, while advocating strict waste management and strong state regulations. The coalition coexists with lawmakers and industry voices as they seek balanced development and environmental protections.

KU professor pursues sugar fuel from farm biomass
University of Kansas chemical engineering assistant professor Galen Suppes develops a sugar based fuel from grass, corn stalks, and surplus grain to replace diesel. He notes sugar fuels cost less than ethanol or methanol from biomass and can run in conventional diesel engines once dissolved. A provisional patent was filed as tests show workable sugar diesel blends.
