Pipeline Poop and the Soviet Gas Project Controversy
The Reagan administration clashes with European allies over a 3500 mile Soviet gas pipeline costing about 14 billion dollars slated for completion in 1984. It could supply ten billion dollars worth of gas annually, mainly to France Italy West Germany and Austria, potentially a ten percent share of energy in those nations. U.S. opposition centers on Russian Poland involvement and fears of Moscow’s economic leverage. new scrutiny arises over slave labor used in construction, with claims of jailed religious and political detainees and Vietnamese workers. If verified, these accusations could influence American stance on the embargo and hurt U.S. industry.
