French Bishop Defies Papal Ban Draws Pope's Ire

Castel Gandolfo Italy AP Pope Paul VI denounces traditionalist French bishop Marcel Lefebvre for publicly celebrating Mass in defiance of a papal ban. Vatican spokesman calls this a moment of tranquility with possible excommunication or removal from priesthood as legalities unfold. Lefebvre led a 7000 strong Mass in Lille, challenging modern language reforms of Vatican II and defending calls for tighter church authority. An American priest assisted, and Lefebvre asserts the church has entered an adulterous marriage with revolution, risking separation from the church.
