In Independence and Kansas City area facilities, elderly residents compete in a three-tier Miss Missouri Nursing Home Pageant system. Nell Shepherd, the 105-year-old pageant pioneer, hoped to be buried with her tiara as winners celebrate stories from Great Depression and World War II, inspiring staff to enrich lives until the end.
