Naturalization Worth The Wait

The Khamkhane Anonthysene family from Laos has become new Americans after a two year Thai refugee camp wait and sponsorship by Ottawa Church of the Brethren in 1979. The family, now naturalized, includes Boumane, Khamkhane, Souvana, Watsana, Ngameta, and others, with members employed locally and children in Ottawa schools. Older Houses May Be Real Energy Losers

Kansas State University energy expert Bruce Snead notes pre1960 wood frame homes lose 15 to 30 percent of heat through exterior walls and uninsulated walls can drive up summer cooling load. Insulating walls with cellulose raises Rvalue from four to about 15, cutting heat loss by roughly 75 percent and boosting comfort. Costs range 50 cents to 1 dollar per square foot for contractor work. DIY insulation may halve that.
